Here we come again, Zoo Negara!

Crowd: 120 students, 15 teachers

“My child really got wild upon arriving at the Zoo. And you are bringing 120 of them there..?!” We have been answering this question over and over again since the day the trip was announced.

Well, seeing is believing. Some curious parents did come along driving. “Amazing” was the common feeling, after they witnessed how kids behaved and disciplined themselves in group, and enjoying.

The day was sunny but pleasant, thanks to the rain the night before which cleared the humidity. We hop up the tram which brought us to visit our favorite animals including the giraffe, the elephant, the pelican and the tiger in a most relaxing manner.

Probably the most enjoyable part was the Multiple Animal Show. The Seal was so smart that she can play all kinds of tricks, while the money-hungry Cockatoo will fly onto your arm if you hold out a RM10 note! Penguins as well as giant fishes were just next to the Showground, which we visited after lunch.

Before heading back to the school, we stopped by the Children’s World where cute little animals were within the children’s reach: rabbit, pony, goat, tortoise, and a few others. For kids who have never ever touched an animal before, the experience was simply magical!

A Sun-Maid Day

Sun-Maid, a 100-years-old California-based producer of raisins and dried fruits, came to MHOLC to conduct an educational session on 27-Apr-2011.

The Sun-Maid crew started the session with telling story about grapes growing, then the manufacturing of raisins, and the nutritional value of dried fruits. Students were then invited to come in front of the crowd for story re-telling and quiz challenge. While Tee Ren Jie of C3 Yellow did an amazing job by re-telling almost all details of the process, other boys and girls from various classes gave perfect answers to the questions and of course, won attractive prizes from Sun-Maid!

Thanks to the enthusiatic and skillful Sun-Maid crew, the whole school enjoyed the session very much. In addition, everyone of MHOLC received delicious Sun-Maid food samples!

Afternoon Classes at MHOLC

Thanks to the strong support from all the parents! Almost all classes of MHOLC for 2011 are now full, but enquiries are still coming in.

MHOLC adheres to its small-class principle and therefore our only option is to open afternoon session to accomodate the increasing needs.

Afternoon session will be from 1:30pm till 5:00pm. For each age group, 5 students will be the minimum number to open an afternoon class.

Health Talk: "H1N1 - Facts and Myths"

On 29th January, 2011 at 9am, by MHOLC's invitation Dr. Hamshima Onn from Tropicana Medical Centre delivered her talk on the said topic at our school.

The purpose was to allow children as well as parents to have the right knowledge about Influenza-A and H1N1, so as to avoid it and deal with it the right way.

In short, Influenza-A and H1N1 are still among us, however can be effectively remedied by medicine such as Tamiflu. Unless complications related to lung infection, asthma, heart problems, etc. occured, patients can recover within 24 hours.

At the end of the talk, Dr. Hamshima demonstrated the right ways in hands cleaning to children, and door gifts from TMC was distributed. All recon it was a good community service program.

2010 Annual Concert & Graduation Ceremony

The wonderful 2010 Concert and Graduation Ceremony on 30th October was a great event.

We were pleased by the feedback from the audience that the theme "My Earth My Love" was well chosen and excellently presented by the children. Besides showing their performing talents, we believe that the children's appeal was clearly heard: We deserve a better tomorrow! Please leave us a livable environment!

Saying goodbye to our graduates was never easy, though we know that we should be more than delighted to see them stretching wings for a new horizon. Soar higher and higher, boys and girls, our heart will always be with you...

Phnom Penh Explorers

There they went. Between 27 and 30 August, over the long weekend of Nuzul Al-Quran and Merdeka Day, armed with nothing but their boldness, 9 explorers of MHOLC stormed Phnom Penh City, Kingdom of Cambodia.

What happened within that 4 days 3 nights remain mysterious, probably forever. As long as no police report was lodged, and they came back excited and pleased, we are happy.

Disney @MHOLC

Every year, Play House Disney Malaysia will send crews to MHOLC to conduct a 1.5 hour session with all students. While promoting its image, the session presented by Disney’s professional crews is also highly educational and interesting, instilling good knowledge and great fun within the students.

This year the session was held on Monday, 23rd August and the theme was Mickey Mousekersize. Children enjoyed the interactive story-telling, participated actively along the storyline and the quiz after. On top of prizes given to the winners during the quiz, all students receive souvenirs such as Mickey hat, writing pads, etc. Thank you, Micky and Winnie!

A Scientific Trip

On 18th August, MHOLC went on the 2nd Field Trip this year, to National Science Centre (NSC) located at Mont Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.

As a public institute aiming at promoting general scientific knowledge and interest, NSC has recently been through some major upgrading and has made the centre more attractive to young children.

Under the guidance of teachers, MHOLC students enjoyed viewing the amazing scientific phenomena displaced, placing their hands on various experimental apparatus, and more importantly, enhancing their interest in general science which shall last a lifetime..

MHOLC's expansion

Thanks to the strong support from parents, and the great effort injected by teachers and staff, MHOLC has recorded a significant 53% year-on-year growth in enrolment this year.

The fortunate coincidence was that the immediate neighboring house to our school was available for rent and we were just in time to seal the agreement.

By acquiring this unit, MHOLC is now occupying 4 double-storey link houses in a stretch, offering 12 fully equipped Montessori classrooms, a daycare centre, a multi-functional playground containing a sand pit, and a shaded/tiled water play pool.Our team of teachers has also expanded, to the size of 16, thus maintaining the teacher-student ratio below 1:10, as a commitment to optimize learning quality.

Year 2010 Field Trip 1

We went for our first Field Trip this year on Friday, 16th April. Nature Explorer at Selayang was the destination. Not a huge place but filled with activities for young visitors – aquarium, tortoise feeding, giant tortoise ride, animals display –iguana, monkey, insects, etc., fish catching and so on. Children of MHOLC simply love the trip!

Montessori Apparatus Introductory Workshop

Despite the popularity of Montessori Method across the country, it is in fact not easy to find a school in Malaysia equipped with complete sets of Montessori Apparatus. Not even Institutes that are producing Montessori teachers.

It is thus not surprising that almost all visitors to Montessori House of Little Capers (MHOLC) are amazed by the completeness of its setup: full sets of Montessori Apparatuses - many could only be seen on pictures before - are found in each classroom, being used day in day out, by teachers and students as an integral part of the learning activities.

Feedback from the visitors was that, in many places the apparatus are mainly for display – just to gain/maintain the title of a “Montessori School.” Reasons for not using? Let’s see some common ones:
- Without the know-how to use them
- The apparatuses are costly
- No time to use

To us, none of the above makes sense. Without making full use of the Apparatus as learning aid, no school should be termed “Montessori School”! Simple as that.

Fortunately many of the educationists share our views. While complaining the owner of their school for not investing into the implementation of “true” Montessori Method, our Principal friends were asking if we could help upgrading their teachers in this area.

We are glad to do that, for the sake of promoting quality Montessori learning environment. The first workshop was thus organized, on 21-Dec-2009 at one of the 4-years old classroom of MHOLC. From 9am to 5pm, the 11 kindergarten teachers attended the workshop were introduced to various Apparatuses for the Early Development Group. From the purpose to the way of presentation of each Apparatus, the attendees have gained an eye-opening, first hand experience of the amazing learning tools.

MHOLC Launching Special Needs Classes

Over the past 6 years, quite some parents whose child needs special educational cares have come to Montessori House of Little Capers (MHOLC) for assistance. Turning them away – because we did not possess such expertise – was always heart-breaking: children need help, but unfortunately providers of such services are scarce.

However, the thought of helping the special needs children has never left our mind. What is the excuse not to implement the Montessori Method on special needs learning, if it was actually invented to help special needs children?!
Therefore, along the way we have done research on special education methods, sent teachers for special education workshops, and constantly talked to specialists in this area, just to get ourselves prepared.

The day has finally arrived. MHOLC has successfully formed a Special Needs Team recently, and we will be launching the service in early year 2010!

Our Team consists of Mrs. Dianna Eng, a certified Special Needs Educationist with more than 20 years of hands-on experience; Mrs. Zora, an International Montessori Diploma holder involving in Montessori teaching /training for the last 15 years; Teacher Lim Shih and Teacher Chui Teng, both experienced Montessori Teachers now pursuing their degree of Early Childhood Education inclusive of Special Education.

The Special Needs classes will be conducted as per school calendar, from 2.30pm to 5.00pm in the afternoon. In addition, weekly activities together with children of normal classes will be scheduled to expedite the normalization process.

Before admission, children will be assessed in details by a structured procedure for suitability. If the assessment result is favorable, a tailor-made program with specific learning targets will be constructed for individual child, and periodic progress review will be carried out together with parents.

Since the learning activities will be heavily one-to-one basis, aided by weekly therapy sessions, the fees structure will be different from the normal classes. Please call at our office for further details.

Mandarin Enrichment Class 华小华文加强班

In response to parents’ request, from January 2010 Montessori House of Little Capers (MHOLC) will be conducting optional Mandarin Enrichment Classes for 6 years old students intending to join Chinese Primary School upon graduating from MHOLC.

Students can choose from one of the two classes, namely Class A (3 sessions per week) and Class B (2 sessions per week) according to their needs. All classes will be conducted in the afternoon.

The classes simulate the environment of a Chinese Primary School, by conducting 3 core subjects (Mandarin Language, Mathematics and Science) in pure Mandarin. The purpose is to remove the language barrier so that students can adapt to the Chinese School environment easier.

The classes will be conducted by Teacher Christy, one of the senior teachers of MHOLC, and an experienced tutor for Chinese School students.

Fairytale Fun Craft Workshop

From 01 to 03 December 2009, a Fairytale Fun Craft Workshop was conducted in Montessori House of Little Capers (MHOLC) for children between 4 and 6 years old, as part of our school holiday programs.

Coached by Teacher Michelle, an extremely experienced and creative art tutor, this exciting and fun-filled workshop guided children step-by-step to make three fabulous crafts: Fantasy Castle, Glittery Crown Picture Frame, and Wooden Spoon Princess Puppet.

Throughout the creative process, children listen to and participate in the role play of the fairytale, while putting in effort to create the crafts of their dream! These crafts they created and brought home sure have become one of their most fascinating learning experiences!

Teachers Refreshing Training

At Montessori House of Little Capers (MHOLC), the year-end Refreshing Training is compulsory for all teachers. The purpose of the training is to perfect the teaching skills especially in the area of applying Montessori Apparatuses.

This year, the training was scheduled between 16 to 19 November, from 9am to 5pm daily.

Teachers were trained in groups according to the class level they will be teaching in the next school year. All teachers will take turn to present relevant sets of apparatus in the presence of the Principal and other teachers. Discrepancy / imperfectness in the presentation will be marked, discussed and rectified.

All graduates from Montessori courses recognized that due to constraint in the lecture time, they have limited access to apparatus during their study. Upon joining MHOLC, majority of the apparatuses are “close encounter of the first time” to them. While amazed by the completeness of apparatuses in MHOLC, teachers highly appreciate the opportunities offered by the school in enriching their exposure to the teaching tools and perfecting their teaching skills.

Upon completion of the training, a Certificate of Achievement was awarded to teachers who display mature skills in presenting /applying the respective apparatuses.

MHOLC is Open for Registration Again!

As new school year 2010 is approaching, MHOLC is busying at answering enquiries and arranging guided tours to our school.

While half of the enquiries come through this website, parents’ enthusiastic recommendation constitutes the other half. Thank you, dear parents! Your strong support has ensured our school staying as an ever-improving learning environment.

Since there are only limited places left in most of the classes, new parents are hereby reminded to enroll early to avoid disappointment.

Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease and Rotavirus Gastroenteritis

It has been reported that Hand, Foot & Mouth Disease is here again, and Rotavirus Gastroenteritis cases are also on the rise.

Since the diseases are both contagiouos, and young children can be easily infected, parents are reminded to be more alert and seek medical assistance as soon as possible should the signs and symptoms of these diseases are observed.

Field Trip To Bomba TTDI

In many ways, Bomba represents a place where heroes reside. Be it fires or other disasters, whenever lives and properties are in danger, firemen from Bomba will be there for rescues. These are the real-life superheroes children adore.

On 24th of April 2009, Montessori House of Little Capers organized a field trip to Balai Bomba TTDI, for our children to meet their heroes, at zero distance!

The program was extremely exciting and fun-filled. After a video show of home safety, children were shown around and brought into the fire engine to explore the various functions of the magical vehicle; they took turn to hands-on experiment the use of the fire fighting hose; a fire was put up and teachers as the demonstrators were directed by the Bomba crews to put it off using the fire extinguisher. In addition to the excitement of dressing up the fire fighter gears, the children even witnessed a python arresting show!

To express our sincere appreciation to the crews for their most generous hospitality, a beautifully decorated fruit hamper was presented to the Balai by our Principal Mrs Zora Tham. Thank you heroes, for making this the most educational and memorable field trip of all!

You are invited to participate in SGS (Students Get Students) Program!

Montessori House of Little Capers invites you, parents of our students, to participate in our newly launched SGS program, to save at least 10% on your child’s monthly tuition fee!

Each time you introduce a new student to our school, upon his/her successful registration and fees paid, your child will enjoy a 10% deduction off the normal tuition fee, from the following month onwards.

You may introduce as many as 10 new students to MHOLC, and your child’s tuition fee will be completely waived!

The program will continue till 30-Mar-2009. So act now to save for your child immediately!

Terms and Conditions of the SGS Program
1. For your child to continue enjoying the deduction, the new student must remain as a valid student of MHOLC in the following months.
2. The deduction can neither be converted into cash nor transferred to other students.
3. Deduction only applicable to tuition fee. Textbooks, materials, uniform, registration, insurance, transportation, daycare, concert, field trip and other fees are excluded from this program.
